Can anyone suggest sources/contacts for car top boxes other than Yakima and
Thule? I'd like to pay less than $350 for a Rocket Box clone.

There are lots of places including Sears and Wards that sell similar boxes
but I have seriously doubts about their security. They seem so flimsy. I
didn't buy one because I had the feeling we might not arrive with the
contents still with us.

I have a Sears X-cargo on loan from my in-laws. Only used it once, but I
loaded it up with stuff I needed to move from Cincinnati to Atlanta, and
it worked fine. I set it on the roof between my Yakima bars. Yes, it feels
flimsy, but it really doesn't need to do much but contain the cargo. Of
course, you would carry PFDs, sleeping bags, and clothing in it, not 5
liter jugs of wine. If you were really worried, you could toss a diamond
hitch over the whole thing.

Of course, Rocket boxes are more aerodynamic and far cooler, not least
because of the clever name.

I think a cedar-strip cartop box would be cool. If you had the ability
to build a cedar strip canoe or kayak, a cedar-strip cartop box wouldn't
be hard to design and build. You could probably go to your local Yakima
or Thule dealer and buy a replacement lock so your original rack key
would even unlock the box.

If you could tie a diamond hitch over it, that would make it slightly
cooler. I've never heard of a diamond hitch being used on a vehicle, but
I like it!

We have had a Sears x-cargo for almost ten years and besides the loss of
some of the screws (easily replaced) it has been great for hauling large
amounts of gear.
If you are wanting to move away from the Sears image you can do what my
brother-in-law did and paint it black to match his van. This presented a
very formidable image on the highway!
