This subject was discussed a while ago and the best suggestion (IMO) was to
use drywall sanding screen (abrasive on both sides and impervious to water)
wrapped around the bar under the clamps.  You should be able to find this
stuff at any hardware store or lumber yard.  Give it a try - and report your
results!
