Jim, Great trip report. I am glad to hear you had some fun and excitement in Southern California. Last Saturday was a big swell day, and as you said, I am sure the mouth of Mission Bay was pretty rough. That mouth is well know for large waves that are steep and often break. It makes for a nice playground for experienced sea kayakers. I usually look forward to catching some waves through there, but once during a solo storm paddle all I wanted to do was survive. Sometimes the mouth is closed to boat traffic because it gets too rough. It was too bad the harbor patrol beat you to the rescue. You could've added a notch to you paddle, and besides, it's always best when kayakers take care of each other rather than have the authorities involved. Maybe next time.
