When I go through the Alaska Airlines (the only major airline that flies
into Juneau) metal detectors I usually have at least my everyday pocket
knife and my Leatherman on my person - I just place them in the basket so
that they can be visually examined by the personnel manning the metal
detector and then I'm on my way. The only time I had a problem at an
airport was at O'Hare airport in Chicago when they questioned why I was
carrying a folding knife with a four-inch blade. Maybe things are
_slightly_ more relaxed up here than "Outside" but I shouldn't think that
anyone would give you a hard time about a little Swiss Army type of knife.

I think you've been lucky. They're not supposed to let you carry any knives
on board. I always make sure I put such things in checked and not carry-on
luggage.

My point is that lots of times I just have carry-on luggage.

Re: Knives and flying-

When travelling, I always have a Swiss Army Tinker in my pocket and a
Leatherman in my carry-on. The tinker goes in the basket at the gate metal
detector and the Leatherman stays in the carry-on for the x-ray.

After several countries (including Japan) and a lot of states, I've only
been questioned once. They just had to take the Leatherman out and play
with it in Heathrow. Then they let me on with it.

It is a good policy to allow extra time going through the gate (especially
in Japan) for the people there to play with your toys. They certainly
don't care that you're in a hurry.

Now if I could just get through the metal detector without having to remove
my belt buckle, hold up my pants and.....

Had a nice talk with Paddlewiser Bill Newman at the Quietwater Symposium at
Michigan State this morning -- it's nice to meet someone IRL.

I'm heading on out to Canoecopia in Madison, WI, next weekend; will spend
much of the day there. Any other P-wisers going? Can we work out a meet?

I should be easy to recognize: the guy whose 12 year old is tugging on his
shirt asking "Dad, can we get something to eat now?"

Hey all,

I'll be down at Canoecopia on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The
girlfriend and I decided it would be a nice weekend to take her new
Beetle on a little road trip and B&B action. Anyone have a meeting
place or something in mind? Any idea if they'll be demoing this year?
The weather may be nice enough. We hit (or nearly did) 70 degrees
here in the Twin Cities today.

Patrick & all,

As a Madisonian I can tell you if it didn't get to 70 yesterday it sure was
darn close. Here are the conditions as of yesterday afternoon: Lake Monona
is ice free from 50 - 100 yards around the entire lake. The Yahara river
which connects all of the lakes is open on the isthmus (which never totally
ices over) as well as the river connector between Squaw Bay of Lake Monona &
Lake Waubesa. This is a nice stretch of water which goes through the marsh
area called Upper Mud Lake & underneath the "Beltline" hwy. Don't know about
Lake Mendota/Waubesa/Wingra/Kegonsa conditions.

The ice that is left on Lake Monona is that soft dark blue ice that rises and
falls with the wave action. Suitable only for birds to walk around. If it
stays warm much longer I can't expect this ice to last. It is cool to paddle
around though - gives you that arctic explorer, 10 year old cub scout feeling
of excitement.

I went out yesterday on lake Monona & people we're freaking out. About 12
bass boats & runabouts cruising on the lake like it was July. & Get this -
There was a guy out wakeboarding! Saw a few canoers & kayakers too.

Eventhough the ice is free in back of Rutabaga's shop, I highly doubt you'll
be able to do demoeing. Not because of the exposure risks, but simply do to
the lack of available staff to handle demoes while the show is going on. You
could probably show up at the shop on Monday though & demo a boat. When I
bought my last kayak, I ordered it at Canoecopia to reserve the color that I
wanted, demoed it the next week & took it home that day.

So - all of you driving in for Canoecopia - bring the bought along & enjoy
the view from your cockpit. The closest place to put in at Canoecopia is
Olin Turville Park which is literally across the street from the convention
center. There's an official boat ramp there which is access fee free until
May 1. From this put in, you can cruise around the downtown area. About 2
miles away from the put in is the yahara river as it slices through the
isthmus area. Carl's Paddling is now located on the river about 1/2 through.
They'll be running their Paddlers Rendezvous over the weekend as well so you
may want to check that out. It's free. They carry different brands than
Rutabaga including Bell, Grabner, Necky, P&H etc..

the websites:

Carl's Paddling www.paddlin.com
Rutabaga www.paddlers.com
Isthmus the weekly independent rag to see what's going on in Madison:
                    www.the dailypage.com

If anyone has questions about Madison (eat, sleep, drink, paddle etc..) or need
directions let me know. disclaimer - I have no affiliation with Rutabaga or
Carl's Paddlin - I'm just an avid paddler who's coutning the days to the
first seminar.

Best,

Michael

Not only Japan, but anywhere. I once picked up Alan Carruth at SeaTac airport
who was a guest speaker at the 1995 Guild of American Luthiers convention in
Tacoma and his baggage got red flagged through the metal detectors. Inside, he
had three beautiful, handmade wooden planes which was integral to his talk on
carving guitar braces. None of the three security people had ever seen anything
like this and our explanations as to their function wasn't going over too good,
until a fourth securtiy gal came over and said "oh, my grandpa had some of these
he would make furniture with". Then they all had to admire them while I just
wanted to get out of there and beat the morning rush hour traffic.

I put my SAK in the basket like Dave does. Always have. Never a blink.

I have a Bowker ceramic which I just keep in my pocket when I go through the
metal detector.

That way I never have to remember to remove my Benchmade when I get to the
airport.

I got nailed once while changing planes in Dallas. Got on in FL with the
Benchmade in my pocket but got stopped in Dallas. Had to turn around and try
another gate.
