Regarding carrying knives, the ICAO (UN) and FAA rule is that knives with
blade(s) not longer than 3 inches (don't know what the metric folks call
it) can be carried on board. If you forget this and are turned back at
security (with your 8" carving knife/crossbow/whatever), don't panic - go
back to the check-in counter for your airline and ask them to find a box to
put your knife in, and then check it as luggage. They should have no
trouble with this.

As for the fuel that's "like sterno" sorry, but no go. If anything is
labeled a "gangerous good" (DG) by the UN, it must be packed and labeled in
a specific manner, and have the appropriate paperwork (then you'll need a
second mortgage to pay the charges). The labeling itself is
size/shape/color/text specific. In general something's a DG if it can
burn/fuel a fire(oxidizers)/corrode/make other living creatures ill/might
explode (like pressurized gas regardless of whether or not it's flammable).

Lastly - Ralf Diaz - any idea where to find the wood stoves you mentioned,
with or without the fan?

And I now know why I've been having so much paddling trouble - my boat
doesn't have ANY pointy ends.

Happy paddling - Alan G./Seattle

The stove with the fan was sold as the Sierra Stove. The generic term for
stoves of this type is "stick stoves." These stoves are designed to burn at
high temperatures and consume minimal fuel. Small sticks and twigs are the
intended fuel (you can use pine cones, charcoal briquettes, solid fuel bars,
etc.). For one design and a slightly better explanation, visit

 http://forums.cosmoaccess.net/forum/survival/prep/hobostv.htm

This particular plan is called the "Hobo Stove" and is made from a one
gallon paint can. I suppose that you could make a smaller version from a
quart can. Clean, new paint cans can be purchased at "real" paint stores
(Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc.). Once again, these stoves are
suitable for boiling water and other high heat applications.

I got mine from The Sportsmans Guide (I thing it's www.sportsmansguide.com).
 1-800-CAMPMOR has them also.

Thanks. A bit pricey, though. The one I got from Sportsmans Guide cost
under $20 (perhaps 15?). And folds flat. Has a cordura cover that I think
even has a belt loop. Probably about 3/4" deep and the size of a folded map.
GUESS WHAT I'M GOING TO BE DOING THIS WEEKEND? Searching for alcohol and
wood stoves in my garage.
