I have not witnessed Maligiaq's rolling abilities. I would not even be
aware of who he is if it were not for this list. The people on this list seem
to have made him into some kind of kayaking God. That's fine and dandy. I
just might have to purchase the video of his rolling abilities so I can see
what all of the fuss is about.
In the meantime, I thought Mr. Diaz had an interesting point which forces
me to ask, should Maliqiaq be forced to wear a PFD over here? I tried to ask
this before, but apparently people on this list are afraid to respond to this
question. On one hand, we have Maliqiaq, the legend. On the other hand, we
have the hard-liners who don't know the meaning of compromise, but I think
may be afraid to speak out against Maliqiaq for fear of sounding ridiculous.
I have tried to argue in the past that there are legitimate exceptions to
the "always wear your pfd" rule, only to be hammered by the folks on this
list. So now let's put these views up against "the legend." Is not Maliqiaq
setting a poor example by conducting all of these demonstrations of rolling
without a pfd? Are not those of you who expound upon the virtues of this
young man, who apparently does not wear a pfd, equally guilty of negligence?
Or could it possibly be that, just perhaps, some exceptions do actually exist?

 Scott,
I understand your point. I would also say this, I saw Maliquiaq
demonstrate his skills a year ago. I would say that kayaking for him is
second nature. He needs a PFD about as much as pre-European Americans needed
convenience stores.
The only "virtue" that I would expound upon would be that he did not appear
to be egotistical about his paddling abilities.
The demonstration that I watched was controlled. Small flat water pond
with an expert paddler (Cindy Cole) within ten feet, water temp low 70's,
water depth about 6 feet, thirty people on shore within thirty feet.
   Negligence in what way?
Generally speaking, I believe that there are exceptions to rules. But,
who determines the exceptions? The group or the individual? If you are in a
group, then it has to be the group.

What kind of message are you sending to beginning paddlers who watch the
expert in the water without a pfd? They don't care that it's a small pond
with people standing nearby to help. All they see is that this expert paddler
dosen't wear a pfd, so perhaps pfd's are only for beginners. And since they
don't want to look like a beginner themselves, they won't wear one either!
I understand Maliqiaq was over here to race. Did he wear one for that?

I didn't see him race. Safety equipment requirements and rules are the
responsibility of the sanctioning organization. The rules are set and if you
wish to participate, you follow them.

I assume, however, that all the other paddlers, Including some who were
spectating, were wearing their PFDs!
Insofar as times when paddlers do not wear PFDs, this is so for
flatwater racing. Participants in these sprints are exempt from wearing a
pfd during the competition (although some races may require that one be in
the boat). Reason? This is intense physical exertion. Thermal properties
of a pfd could be sufficient to produce hyperthermia under such conditions.
Also, there is generally a chase boat in the vicinity for safety reasons.

FWIW, I had the pleasure of paddling across Galveston Bay with Maligiaq and
a Houston Canoe Club group last fall. It was a moderately windy day, and he
was in a borrowed (eek, imagine this) plastic kayak. I am pleased to report
to you he WAS wearing a pfd that day, and I am sure he must have been plenty
warm too. AND it was a purple lifejacket. I have a photo to prove it!
