I'm planning a honeymoon vacation to Italy for mid-September and I'm wondering how to squeeze in a bit of paddling. Venice will be one of our stops for a couple of days and I thought that it would probably offer the best opportunity for paddling (the other two stops will be Rome and Florence). Anyone know of any outfitters there that offer day rentals? Am I crazy for even thinking about paddling there? Any advice would be appreciated! >From memories of Venice on many business and tourist trips going back almost 40 years, my suggestion is that it might be a great place to paddle; but it would be a really lousy place to practice your rolls. Hi there, Venice is fine to paddle, go early in the morning in the canals and leave the lagoon for the afternoon. No toxicity observed last year in May. But may change later in summer when water heats up. Traffic is busy may be (we are used to Rotterdam kind of traffic), so take good care. Ralph's ten commandments may keep you alive. Italian lakes are fantastic, locals keep warning about sudden high force winds, general safety for lakes does apply!!! And do not forget to enjoy the italian kitchen!. By the way, about the Germany post from Sandy, our (Dutch) paddling season has already started! Water temp. is not too high, but we had no real winter. Happy paddling!
