I am not sure what they use on factory made paddles, but I put on a coat or two of epoxy, and then used a marine varnish for UV protection on my homemade kayak paddle, and it feels like the wooden ones sold at the local REI. I am about at the same stage as you are with my greenland paddle, also following Chuck's directions.
