Fred, Take a look at the ISK web site http://www.isk.canoe-kayak.org/ for links to sources of the information you want. ISK members and other interested paddlers get together on Wednesday nights for an informal paddle. Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, Cedar and Brownie Lake are connected by canals. There is a parking fee at the city lots ($0.25/hour) or you might be able to find on street parking for free. The Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers are also interesting paddling locations. The feel on the river is far more wild than I expected before I started paddling on the rivers. Without the means to shuttle a vehicle to a downstream location it is possible to paddle on the river, I learned from personal experience that it is best to paddle upstream first and have the option of riding the current home. There is another chain of lakes in St. Paul that extends for miles from Lake Phalen through Keller and on further north. Minnetonka can be interesting, if the motorboaters and jet skeeters are not to active. Another source of ideas on lakes in the area is a metro area fishing guide book. There are several published that give locations of boat launches and descriptions of the lake conditions in addition to the expected fish population data. Licenses for your boats are available at Deputy Registrar offices where ever motor vehicle registrations are made. I registered my last two boats at a city hall. The counties also operate registrar offices. Details on registration requirements are available on the MN DNR web site, we have a link that will get you there on the ISK web site. Be sure to bring a copy of some proof of ownership like a sales receipt or you may find the registration clerk gets cranky.
