This might be a situation where insurance would be a better deal than an
electronic alarm. I insure my glass boat for $35/year, about 1.2 percent of
the replacement cost. This is nothing compared to the depreciation of the
first day's ownership. I figure I will keep this up until the boat is so
battered that I couldn't sell it for $1000, then arrange to have it stolen ;-)

I store the boat in the garage, and I can't remember if this was a factor in
the quote, or conditional for the offer to insure. I still usually use a
cable and padlock while cartopping if I plan to turn my back on the
boat for more than a few minutes, but it does reduce the anxiety level
greatly. My insurer is Amica, which I've naver made a claim on, but my
girlfriend and her family have used them for many years and think they are
good, so I do have some faith in the coverage.

The liability coverage could also come in handy if I ever run over a jetskier!
or, more realisticly, a surfer or swimmer at the beach.

Good idea. Do they give deep discounts to multiple boat owners: one owner -
several boats? :)

I never asked. I didn't consider the plastic boats to be worth worrying
about, although if they were less than 10 bucks a year extra, it might
make sense. Then if only someone would steal the Dancer...

Check with your agent. Different companies differ. Some companies don't
charge any extra for hand powered boats tacked on to homeowner's insurance.
I learned the hard way, on an unrelated issue -- now when I buy a boat, the
insurance agent finds out about it about as soon as my wife does.

Data point for all: my homeowner's insurance policy allowed me to tack on
"boat coverage" for three kayaks (new value about US$2000 each; includes a
chunk of additional coverage for unscheduled accessories: paddles, etc.) for
theft, fire, liability, etc., for only $45/year.

Caveat: read the fine print. My rider stipulates:

1. US$250 deductible

2. Limited to the geographical US (NOT covered in Alaska or Hawaii), and Canada
**within 100 miles of the WA state border.** [Includes territorial waters up
to 15 miles offshore.]

3. Limited to ACV **at time of loss,** meaning the depreciated value of the
boat/gear, etc., or the cost to repair. Says they will repair plywood,
plastic, fiberglass, and molded hull boats, according to accepted industry
standards, if damaged.

4. They also pay reasonable costs incurred for steps taken to protect the boat
from further loss in the event of a collision (etc.).

YMMV

Correction: the US$45 is for 6 months, not a year.
