Hey-$35 a year. I think my homeowners would cover subject to deductible since it was stolen from my yard. However, getting coverage across the board for $35 a year is incredible. Can you post more info on that insurance company such as how to get in touch with them. I still think we should take every reasonable caution to prevent theft. Do any of you leave your Kayak on top of a vehicle and if so, do you lock it or just hope? Phares M. Heindl Phares M. Heindl P. A. I insure my glass boat for $35/year, about 1.2 percent of the replacement cost. This is nothing compared to the depreciation of the first day's ownership. I figure I will keep this up until the boat is so battered that I couldn't sell it for $1000, then arrange to have it stolen ;-) I store the boat in the garage, and I can't remember if this was a factor in the quote, or conditional for the offer to insure. I still usually use a cable and padlock while cartopping if I plan to turn my back on the boat for more than a few minutes, but it does reduce the anxiety level greatly. My insurer is Amica, which I've naver made a claim on, but my girlfriend and her family have used them for many years and think they are good, so I do have some faith in the coverage. The liability coverage could also come in handy if I ever run over a jetskier! or, more realisticly, a surfer or swimmer at the beach. If you check your regular homeowner's policy, chances are watercraft are not covered. Same for your auto insurance. I got an additional policy through my house insurance company for all 8 boats in my garage. Helps me sleep better too. I got a cold call for a home insurance quote and made it clear the quote needed to include coverage for 2 sea kayaks. The agent called back about 3 times, over 5 weeks, before he was able to finish getting a quote. He was surprised at how hard a time he had finding out how to cover a sea kayak. He said he had learned a lot while making the quote. Unfortunately, for him, he didn't beat the existing policy. kirk *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
Robert C. Cline wrote: > > I second the motion. Who else has boat insurance?? We talked with out agent (state farm) about boat insurance awhile ago, trying to sort out what sort of insurance made sense. Their rates really are more geared more toward larger, power or sail boats. Adding to the complexity, is the two pygmy coho's, homebuilt, which the insurance company really doesn't have a clue about replacement value. I might be able to get reimbursment for the cost of the kit, but not my time building them, or finished value. I think what it worked out is that under the homeowners policy, the store bought kayaks would be covered up $1000. If they were valued above that, you needed to get a per boat insurance policy, like for a car or power boat. So since we mostly have rotomolded in the fleet other than the pygmys, it wasn't worth getting a seperate policy, If I had a nice, expensive fiberglass or kevlar kayak, worth several thousand, it might be worth having a seperate policy for that. So, ask around, what will be covered, what is the deductable, is there a maximum payout per incident (and what if gear is stolen at the same time)? When if at all does it make sense to have a seperate policy per kayak. What does the boat policy cover? dave *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

If it's taken off the car, I can make a claim even without a police report!!! No evidence of theft (damage etc) reqd. Caveat - I haven't tested the company's claim handling on this, so getting a settlement may be easier said than done, but for car (hit by drunk) and home (break in) they were no problem at all. Economical Mutual Ins Co. The coverage is under the same catagory as for small power boats, sailboats etc. Mike *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
<If you check your regular homeowner's policy, chances are watercraft are not covered. Same for your auto insurance. I got an additional policy through my house insurance company for all 8 boats in my garage.> One thing to check on homeowner's policies is whether your boats are covered only while in the house/garage. That seems to be the case with most U.S. insurance companies these days --- in other words, homeowner's insurance may cover the boats while they're on your premises but not when they're on the car or in the water. The other biggie is liability insurance; not to revisit the great PaddleWise bow'n'stern tiedown debate, but, if your sleek sea kayak did somehow leave your vehicle at speed and become a freeway missile, are you covered for the damage it could do?
