Jed,

My experience is limited since I have only had it about a month. I have not
put it in a bag at all. It has survived a couple of trips tied to the deck
with quite a bit of splashing (waves were sometimes coming over the cockpit)
and has gone through one short rolling session (6-8 rolls) just tied on the
front deck. I got my first Coast Guard emergency broadcast just after these
rolls. So far so good. I am taking it out for some more rolling tommorrow.

I have one question. Are there any special tricks or precautions to use when
taking out or putting back in the NI-cad battery to make sure it is still
submersible? Not a whole lot of information in the manual.

Thanks Mark,
I would suspect just the Standard (forgive the pun) cleaning of the
gasket and maybe apply a bit of Vaseline (or 303?) to ensure a good seal. I
plan to use mine, sans bag since it has a decent guarantee. Besides, as they
say "Image is everything"

Jed (now more dangerous than ever, with my new HX350S)

Just a quick note on the HX350S.... It works well, and submersibility seems
intact after 1.5 seasons. I started out using it in a bag -- just to be
safe -- and all was well until the day I really needed it and we were in
"conditions." I hadn't turned it on prior to embarking, and found it
impossible to twist the power-on/volume knob through the bag, even though I
had done it many times on shore and in calm water. So I took it out of the
bag and it worked fine. Never bothered with the bag again.

I've had mine for about two years, and have swum and rolled with it without any problem. However, last year I did get a small amount of water inside the case --- never figured out how --- and had to send it back in for a look. Service at Standard was okay, but extremely slow --- at least eight weeks. However, it's working fine now, has not had any problems since then, is easy to operate, and is still probably the best unit out there.

I wash it carefully and fully in fresh water after every use --- which can get some funny looks in public washrooms --- and I periodically take the battery unit off to clean the gasket and ensure that no water intrusion has taken place.

I have had my HX350S about 2 months. I found that after a real rough sea
entry (crash and burn type) the speaker did not work until it dried out. I
contacted Standard Horizon who advised that the speaker is waterproof and in
its own waterproof compartment. Just shake the water out and it would work
fine. I did a couple of tests with high pressure water from a hose to
produce the same effect, shook it out a couple of times and it was like new.
Yes it works, it is submersible and you do not need a bag.
