Consider using Wallace Island Marine Park as a base. Only about 1.5 miles from launch at Southey Point/end of Arbutus Road (on the north end of Saltspring Island, perversely). This crossing could be gnarly in strong N or S wind, but is relatively protected. From WIMP, there are several day trips possible. And, if windbound, there is hiking to do on the island, which has some interesting history, and is very pretty. Most of Wallace is owned by BC Parks, but some 11 acres are private. There is a $5/night fee. Details in Mary Ann Snowden's "Island Paddling," 2nd Ed., Orca Book Publishers, ISBN 1-55143-065-7 Orca has PO Box 468 in Custer, WA 98240-0468 My SO and I spent four nights there a month ago, and had the CG to ourselves, midweek. In summer, it is a madhouse, I gather. If the weather craps out, there are many B and B's on Saltspring. -- Dave Kruger Astoria, OR *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced/forwarded outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Sat Oct 14 2000 - 18:32:45 PDT
