Nick, You just restated exactly what I suggested in different terms. At one
point I even said:

I think you will find that by using one-half of the maximum steepness angle
for the tangent line you will get the exact same point as by your suggestion
of using 50% of the maximum steepness. Two ways of looking at it, but it
does the exact same thing. I like picturing it using the tangents because it
is easy to eyeball 1/2 the angle and then move (in ones mind) that imagined
1/2 angle line to the point where it is a tangent to the curve. You don't
have to measure angles or even put pen to paper to pinpoint the "risk" angle
of the kayak within a degree or two.
