Congratulations to several of this list's members who have recent articles printed. Kirby and Karen Stevens have a really imformative article called "Kayaking Rescue Tips to Save The Kids" in this month's issue of Kanawa magazine, and Ulli Hoeger, Nick Schade and Shawn Baker (and maybe others whose names I don't recognize as being list members) have articles in the new issue of Wavelength magazine. Being a wooden boat fan, I really enjoyed the entire Wavelength issue and would like to congratulate everyone there as well. Kirby and Karen's write up describe safety for children in three stages from 6 months to 13+, and they have lots of safety, rescue and dressing tips included. Thanks for your support. As you can tell by the article we have been kayaking as a family for many years. It sure adds a different dimension to sea kayaking when you bring a child along. When we first started bringing out daughter we were criticised widely for taking a baby or a young child into an "adult domain". Way back then we lost many paddlers we used to paddle with because they didn't like children coming along sea kayaking . One thing we did stress during our learning curve way back when was safety and this is something we still promote when teaching. My wife, daughter and I have been teaching for many years at the West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium in Port Townsend and during this time we have had the opportunity to speak to lots of parents that would like to get into sea kayaking but are unsure about bringing their children. Many go away believing that it is possible taking the right safety precautions. But, on the flipside others who have taken their children out haven't a clue on how to do rescues at all or let alone with their children. Often their reply is we won't ever capsize or go out in such conditions. I don't want to capsize either when kayaking but we also train and learn what to do just in case something happens. We have also lost track on the times that we have gone out on a nice day only to have the wind come up when you are crossing some channel and it is then that ! ! ! ! ! ! you would like to know what to do. I am glad you liked our article, I will be having another article coming out in another magazine this spring on Clayoquot Sound. Bye for now.
