Subject: [Paddlewise] Any fun in Salt Lake CIty????

Not really a paddling issue, but I'll be in Salt Lake City for a week in mid
February for business, with a couple days to myself. Any recommendations on
some fun things to do? I know, I know.......Ski. I'm not much of a skier,
and already have the info on that. Anything else? Any must do hikes,
museums, etc? Anything adventurous or exciting to recommend would be
appreciated.

Rick (....Virginia)

Hi Rick- there are several possibilities for adventure in the SLC area in
addition to skiing. Hiking is tough this time of year locally because of
deep snow cover on most of the trails. Snowshoeing is pretty much the
equivalent of hiking, although I think it is more fun than just walking.
You can rent state of the art snowshoes at several outdoor shops including
REI or Wasatch Touring. The latter is closer to downtown Salt Lake. If you
are interested in trying snowshoeing out I might be able to meet up with you
for a free guided tour. I usually go out several times a week and have
extra gear that you could use. I also cross country and telemark ski- but
they are considerably harder to learn and enjoy than snowshoeing. If you
have a couple of consecutive free days and a car you could drive down to
Moab. There is terrific road and mountain biking there with good quality
rentals available; usually snow free hiking in Canyonlands and Arches parks;
and you can probably still rent a kayak, canoe or sea kayak in Feb to paddle
on the Colorado River. It runs through town and has 15-20 miles of
basically flat water. The rapids are farther up and down stream. The
terrain around Moab is unique in the world and attracts thousands of
international tourists- most of whom come in the summer. It is the area
with the rock towers, cliffs and dirt roads made famous in car commercials
and westerns. Moab is about 4 hours south of Salt Lake and is at a lower
elevation with warmer temperatures. It rarely snows, but when it does the
scenery is really spectacular with the white snow on red rock. If you'd
like more info feel free to e-mail me or give me a call at 435-649-5906
(day). BTW I'm a transplated easterner- who ended up moving to Park City
(15 minutes from Salt Lake) for the adventure.
