Dan Cook claims that members of the Nordkapp Expedition of 1975 invented bulkheads, hatches, and the built-in bilge pump expressly for the expedition, though this might have been a parallel invention. At the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium a few years ago, he showed several slides of the different hatches they experimented with before they settled on one design.
