If a structural element is perfectly uniform and subject to a uniform load,
the ideal support points are one-quarter the overall length in from the ends.

Since a kayak is skinny in the ends and fatter in the middle, supporting its 
own weight means that the ideal position for the supports would be closer
to the waist than the quarter points.  So thirds may be a reasonable
approximation.
