Duane, Great story, thanks for informing us about it. As soon as I read that the cockpit coaming was under water (after a cracked stern in the surf), I said to myself, "didn't he have airbags?". It was telling how the end of the article, it says that they are now "big fans of airbags". More emphasis should have been made on this point in the article. A safety admonition is to always have two kinds of flotation (e.g. airbags, bulkheads, seasocks), or else you are increasing your level of risk. This is a fine thing to do, so long as you are able to accurately judge your ability to handle the increased risk. Not sure if your judgment is accurate? ...use backup flotation.
