I thought the reason power boats traditionally slowed in the vicinity of
canoes was that waves created at a higher speed had a shorter wavelength
than one created at lower speed (perhaps because they included a shock
wave?) and that the larger but slower wave transmitted less energy and thus
was less destabilizing than the smaller but faster wave.
