I want to apologize to anyone else I offended by the crack about not wanting
to paddle alongside someone discussing the techincal aspects of paddle
performance. In my [small] mind it was a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that
I don't understand it and have trouble visualizing it all. After re-reading
what I wrote, it was not nice, nor funny, and I truly did not mean it to be
insulting. Thank you, Bob Myers, for properly calling me to task.

science makes you uncomfortable, but please don't tell the rest of us what
we may or may not enjoy.

For anyone not interested in the technical discussion on paddling,
I would suggest not reading. Please don't insult the participants by
insinuating that those who are interested in the discussion can't
enjoy paddling simply because you don't understand their conversation.
It's rude and usually results in premature end of the discussion (which
is usually the complainer's intent). You want to discuss something
else, then introduce a subject about paddling that you enjoy.

I don't know squat about flying a space ship but I'll bet all the
tech talk among the astronauts doesn't diminish their total pleasure
in the trip. If I were to be lucky enough to be along for the trip
with them, the talk would never bore me as I would be in too much
awe of my surroundings.

To each his own.

Jackie

It's all how you phrase the question. Instead of asking "When paddling, do you
prefer a high or low aspect blade?" the question should have been worded "When
nude, do you prefer a high or low aspect paddle."

More seriously, I don't think that it is possible to peg down an answer to the
question (nude or not), because the type of blade will affect the way one
paddles, so it becomes a matter of apples and oranges. Similarly, to make
some blades work, you have to go at it flat out, which is not necessarily
useful for long jaunts.

Cheers,
Richard Culpeper

James, that was a very nice apology ... and you were very generous to offer it
so willingly.

The "scientific" analysis of paddle efficiency has been fascinating to me, as
much as a sociological phenomenon as a technical one, although I have learned
some things and now am curious to try a narrow paddle, even perhaps a
Greenlander style one!

Thanks to Peter, Nick, Michael, Mel, Bob, John, you, and the several others who
have contributed.

I have yet to read Bob Myers analysis, which jsut arrived here, and would have
already, but Doug Lloyd is in town, and due here any minute ... more anon.

Thanks again, folks.
