I discovered the benefits of swimming with your paddle in the reservoir
near me. It seems like you can get to shore about twice as fast. Keep in
mind the water was dead calm. I have no idea if this would help in surf or
other rough conditions.

Yes, "swimming" with your paddle can be fast, thanks for testing it out for
us! It also seems awkward. I wonder how it works for short people using long
sea kayak paddles? (I'm 6'2 with long arms so I wouldn't know :)

You can also use a paddle as a bodysurfing aid when swimming to shore in the
surf. But this only works with an unfeathered paddle. I have heard it can be
quite effective for catching waves, though I haven't had the opportunity to
test it out.

Cheers,
kevin

I'd like to see a demonstration of this. I've tried several different ways of
swimming with a paddle and none seem to work particularly well.

I've tried on my stomach with feathered and unfeathered and on my back
with both feathered and unfeathered. I've tried holding the paddle in
front of me and close to me as well as along my arms.

The most relaxing seems to be on my back unfeathered, but nothing seems
really powerful.

Any hints?

Mike

Mike,

Wayne Horodowich's new video has a demonstration of this. He uses it while on
his stomach with his hands extended in front of his head. I suggested to him
last year, that I preferred doing a back stroke with it by extending it beyond
my head as well.

Wayne has told me he has tried both methods and he prefers on his stomach. I
(who am not anywhere near Wayne's league) prefer to use it with a back stroke.

I guess it really is "different strokes for different folks. But the main
point is It does work!!

Steve
