Yes, it rains lightly almost all the time, and heavily occasionally. Southeastern Alaska IS a national rainforest, even though we usually think of rain forests as being hot. Paddling Glacier bay is fabulous. Some of the outfitters are a bit on the expensive side. I don't remember who has better prices than whom. Juneau: call ahead, because it's very touristy, and easier to get situated if you know ahead of time what you're doing. While there, take the little tram to the top of the mountain and see a very well done film about the interplay of European and native cultural development there. There are actually several good outfitters in Sitka, and you can get tours as well as renting or buying all the stuff you need. Baidarka Boats is my favorite. The people there are much more environmentally aware than others. PLEASE do dress warmly and take someone with you. Hypothermia kills VERY quickly in water that cold. :) Have a blast. I'll only go on the short, simple, close to shore things that are offered. alaska holds wonders close to shore, I have a feeling you will kayak a lot more than you think. Many alaska ports of call have outfitters renting kayaks where the tour ships dock. > <<Take a paddling jacket and some warm fleeze and GO FOR IT! >> > >yeah, right, like I own a paddling jacket...got plenty of fleece >though. Sitka offers great kayaking...put in at the Centienial building (an outfitter rents boats there...just look for the blue bus) then paddle toward the light house and paddle amid the islands. watch for whales in Silver Bay to the west. Glacier bay is spectacular in scenery. You should see a lot of seals with their new born pups near the Glaciers. The railroad trip in skagway is fun, not a lot of variety in paddlling though. May is also a good time for whale spotting. Many of the whales have returned from hawaii and are feeding for thr first time in months >Bob, this is one of those "trip of a lifetime" things> I know you will have a good trip...just be prepared for rain Bob ************************************************************************ *** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
