Hi there,

A friend of mine and I are planning a kayak/camping trip to either
the Central Coast (British Columbia) or to the South Moresby Island
area. We'd love to hear from paddlers who've been in either area, so
that we can decide which we'd like to do and when.

In particular, we'd like to know 1. when the best time to go would
be, based on days of sunshine, wildlife viewing and fishing, and
times when other tourists might be in the area 2. when the fishing
is best for pink salmon or trout, 3. the best ways to get to the
areas from either Seattle or Vancouver (the city) and 4. any other
wonderful tidbits of information you'd like to share.

We appreciate the help!

Thanks,
Vicki

I've been to the southern part of Moresby several times over the last ten
years.

It rains a lot up there, with June supposedly more sun than July/August. I've
had trips where it rained every day for 2 weeks, and trips where it only rained
one or two days over two weeks. Wildlife is always good for viewing, sometimes
the bears too close. Fishing for bottom fish is good outside the inlets,
always. During the summer, the park is virtually at capacity. Get
reservations as soon as they open. Supernatural BC coordinates reservations.

Not sure which years the pinks run (even or odd?), and there is no trout
fishing on South Moresby.

If you rent everything, fly to Sandspit and use Moresby Explorers for rentals.

If you plan to use your own boats, cheapest is to drive inland to Prince
Rupert, ferry to the Charlottes, and then use Moresby Explorers for Zodiac
transport. From Seattle, allow two days (minimum) to Rupert. After
reservations in the Park are secured, then be sure to make reservations for the
Rupert-Charlottes ferry before May

The Charlottes can be rugged and unforgiving. If you do not already have some
West Coast wilderness paddling experience, consider using one of the several
good outfitters who run trips there. If you contact Parks Canada (Gwaii
Haanas), they will ship you an info packet with excellent info on all your
questions. GH also has a good web site -- sometimes out of date.

Great place. Lotta people pressure now. The most common route is crowded by
my standards, but still incredibly lovely. Better to spend some time exploring
out of the way inlets. Perversely, the area to the north of the Park is
less-visited, and has some very nice spots. Consider paddling around Louise
Island (about a week). Email me separately and I'll send you a couple old trip
reports (all have appeared here previously).
