I've been washing my kayak gear to get ready for a paddle on Sunday. Air
temp is about 82 and water temp is around 65.

What's snow? ;-)

May can be a great time to paddle in Alaska. The temps will seem cool but by
May the ice should be gone and when the sun comes out it can reach the 60s
and feel like 70s. Just dress for rain especially in Ketchikan. The bears
love to roam the beaches in may so you have a good chance of seeing one.

this is the best kind of ship. Being smaller it can run some of the narrower
passages the big boats cannnot. Do you know the name of the ship? Send me
the itenery (sp) an I can give you some other places to paddle>

well, they say you can go kayaking down

alaska holds wonders close to shore, I have a feeling you will kayak a lot
more than you think. Many alaska ports of call have outfitters renting
kayaks where the tour ships dock.

Buy an inexpensive paddle jacket just for the trip....if it adequately sheds
rain and wind you will do fine for day trips.

yes but this means the alaska aligators are still hibernating!

Sitka offers great kayaking...put in at the Centienial building (an
outfitter rents boats there...just look for the blue bus) then paddle toward
the light house and paddle amid the islands. watch for whales in Silver Bay
to the west.

Glacier bay is spectacular in scenery. You should see a lot of seals with
their new born pups near the Glaciers.
The railroad trip in skagway is fun, not a lot of variety in paddlling
though.

May is also a good time for whale spotting. Many of the whales have returned
from hawaii and are feeding for thr first time in months

I know you will have a good trip...just be prepared for rain

Yes, it rains lightly almost all the time, and heavily occasionally.
Southeastern Alaska IS a national rainforest, even though we usually
think of rain forests as being hot.

Paddling Glacier bay is fabulous. Some of the outfitters are a bit on
the expensive side. I don't remember who has better prices than whom.

Juneau: call ahead, because it's very touristy, and easier to get
situated if you know ahead of time what you're doing. While there, take
the little tram to the top of the mountain and see a very well done film
about the interplay of European and native cultural development there.

There are actually several good outfitters in Sitka, and you can get
tours as well as renting or buying all the stuff you need. Baidarka
Boats is my favorite. The people there are much more environmentally
aware than others.

PLEASE do dress warmly and take someone with you. Hypothermia kills
VERY quickly in water that cold.

:)

Have a blast.

Tori

On this trip I can only say I am exceedingly envious. Rev. Bob's
information is right on (of course he's lived there for how long...),
especially on rain. I've used Juneau as my jumping off spot and several
times in May. Always camping trips. Coldest was maybe 30 overnight; most
nights in the low 40s, some days even to upper 60s. Most days in the 50s.
Raingear absolutely. Anybody mention rubber boots? The inexpensive ones
from outdoor shops that come up to your knees, and if you wear them under
goretex pants with a snap or other tightener around your ankles and OVER the
boots you'll keep your tootsies warmer than any other method, also the best
footwear for Alaska hiking -most places gonna be very wet underfoot. Also
good when you step out of a kayak in ankle deep 34 degree water...

>The itinerary is: Vancouver, Metlakatla, Juneau, Skaway, Glacier Bay,
Sitka,
>Ketchikan, Vancouver.

If memory serves me right (I never arrived by tour boat), there are at least
two outfitters within walking distance of the dock. Hang a right along the
main street - better yet spot them from on deck as you come in but probably
you'll want to contact them before you go into port. Every direction from
Juneau has good paddling. If you had time, you could paddle from Juneau to
Skagway to re-meet the ship. Don't miss Glacier Bay from whatever craft!
...
May is also a good time for whale spotting. Many of the whales have returned
from hawaii and are feeding for thr first time in months...

We expect a full report with photos!

Have a great time.
