In my case, I did a gel coat repair using a waxless gel coat. I didn't clean up the surface very well (too eager to paddle) and there was still a thin sticky residue on the gel coat surface. The pad on the saddle left a grey layer on the surface of the gel coat. Since the original poster said he did a gel coat repair, perhaps the same thing happened to him.
