As long as we're on the subject, no discussion of making your own outdoor gear
is complete without mention of Seattle Fabrics. Huge selection of outdoor
fabrics and related stuff [like patterns, nylon packcloth, goretex,
goretex-clones, heavy vinyl covered cloth (my son's boyscout troop used this
stuff to make each kid a set of snowshoes), straps, clips, buckles, neopreme
(sp?), heat-sealable water-proof nylon (for making your own custom dry bags of
any shape (like waterproof sleeping pad or tent bags, etc.), plus special glues
and stuff like that]. Check out their web site at
http://www.seattlefabrics.com/default.htm . FYI, I have no connection with them
other than I like their store a lot.

I think one of the best web sites to center on is Penny Schwinn's (not sure of the spelling
of her last name) http://www.specialtyoutdoors.com.

This site has lots of tips and links to other resource sites, including Seattle Fabrics.
You might find a source closer to home than Seattle.

If you've been following rec.backcountry or other similar newsgroups, she posts
regularly often helping with repair and maintenance issues.

To all who gave links to fabric retailers: Thanks. At last I managed to find
some Aquashell (waterproof, breathable stretch fleece) to make my own
wetsuit. The stuff is made somewhere in the USA, I had to buy it in Canada
while I live in the Netherlands. On the Internet, this is a small world...

You might want to check out www.justmakeit.com. They have a LOT of outdoor
fabrics for sale.

One other vote for this site and retailer from here in Texas. Another
unusual fabric they have that I haven't located elsewhere is the
"Illuminite" fabric. Sorry to say I've been too busy paddling and otherwise
to get the jacket made that I'd intended, but it looks just the thing for
night paddling if you want to be seen. Would be great for night time bike
riders too, or any other activity where you may share the roadway or
waterway with vehicles equipped with lights.

Hello,
Can anyone tell me how to measure ocean wave height?
I read about collecting Canadian Ballast Rocks. What size, shape, weight,
etc. is considered a good ballast rock? Don't the rocks cause some damage
to a kayak unless they are tied down someway?

blue heron as she lifts uncertainly from the brilliant blue of a

I have found this fabric harder to see than people with ordinary fabrics on
which there are stripes or crosses of reflective material. I think this is
one reason why these reflective fabrics did not catch on. They were not as
good as what they were trying to replace even though they had the advantage
that you did not look like a dork in daylight.
