What is/are the site(s) that provide high resolution photos of earth
from satellites. Say you wanted to compare a nautical or Geological
survay map of a coastal marsh with an actual photo of the same
marsh.

Thanks,

Mapquest now has some fairly high resolution photos. You can toggle back
and forth from a street map to an aerial photo and back.

www.terraserver.com is a good system but their coverage is spotty.

Maptech.com doesn't have aerial views but it *does* have nautical charts.

The National Ocean Service MapFinder (http://mapfinder.nos.noaa.gov/)
has low res nautical charts as well as coastal photography. The interface
can be a little slow while you try to narrow down to the photos you want.
Make sure you check (Display Online Products Only) or you will
get a list of everything available from NOS...

I'll second the Mapquest recommendation; I use it a great deal in
some outdoor courses I teach and they are a great reference... Some of the
photos are older black & white ones. I assume those areas haven't been
rephotographed yet. The color and detail is very good overall and I can make
out my house quite easily...
Topozone is a great reference for topo maps for the USA, down to
1:24000 scale. No photos, but what I like is that I can put a crosshair on
the map and get the UTM coordinates for that location... or vice versa, for
that matter..

Hello Chuck,

Terraserver and the NOAA/NOS sites were mentioned, but for even closer
range detailed aerial photography, I've found a very nice site for my
state (WA State, USA).

I'm not sure about how other states and/or countries handle this, but
in Washington State, the Dept. of Ecology has a site where you can
follow, image by image, aerial photographs of all the state's
*saltwater* coastlines (islands included). Perhaps there is a similar
service where ever you are - or for where you're interested in.

The Photos are clear, quite close up, and in color (it was easy for me
to find my house). Here's the site for WA State:

http://www.ecy.wa.gov/apps/shorephotos/

To get this, as well as the NOAA/NOS sites to work properly, you'll
need to enable Java Scripting for your browser.

I would be really interested to hear from people in other US states,
as well as in any other country, about similar coastal aerial photo
sites/services for their areas.

Melissa

In our county in Florida, the Property Appraiser's web site contains recent,
detailed, color aerial photos of the county available online free of charge.
The web site let's one swtich easily between map views and aerial views of the
same area in the same way that MapQuest works for a few parts of the country.

Here's the site as an example:
http://205.172.172.144/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=Brevard1&Cmd=TID&id=20011220&tid=2612178

(Just select "Aerial" and click "Change" with Java enabled... and just where
would paddlers be without enabled Java :-)
