I wish I had such nice experiences to share about paddling with cats. The one time I tried it, the cat seemed a bit upset by the idea of having all that water moving around the hull. And he was ensconsed deep in the hull all the way at the bow. And the boat was white, so the cat could see the shadow of the bow wave moving past him. And I was in a sprint racing boat, which is awfully tippy if you've never paddled one. And the cat kept shifting around in the bow, throwing my balance off. And I didn't know how to roll back then. And I wasn't wearing a skirt, so rolling would have been impossible anyway. And the woman who is now my spouse was on shore saying really unkind things about my judgement. And she was saying them very loudly. And this was during a training camp with a lot of other paddlers around. [We've been married for thirty years but I still hear about this incident once in a while.] And we had to put the boat on end and shake it to dislodge poor Sam the cat. He lived another eighteen years, so, yet again, no animals were harmed in the making of this tale. Paddling with plastic pink flamingos is really a lot more fun than paddling with cats.
