Since the airlines have become so unreasonable about letting people carry on
essentials like paddles, I am thinking of buying an NRS Paddle Bag, large,
$53.95, for airline travel. I thought I could wrap non-essentials, like
clothes, around my paddle, tag it as fragile, and check it through. I use a
Werner paddle that breaks down. Anybody have an opinion on whether this is a
good/bad idea?

Jolie,

FWIW, this is my opinion having logged at least
100,000 commercial air miles per year for the last 5
years...

If you like your paddle and want to keep it, don't do
this. The ONLY way to safely check your paddle
through is in a hard-shell check-thru style golf case
or other hard-shell luggage that it will fit into,
with your gear and clothing stuffed around it to keep
it from slopping around.

Still yet, if you can rent what you want at the other
end that's the best bet. Choice #2 is shipping it to
yourself.

I might also add that in all those miles I have not
once ever lost a piece of luggage or filed any claim
for damage. I have, however, witnessed plenty of
baggage handling antics. I use hard-shell luggage.

Cheers,
Jennifer

The wisest choice is to go with a nice Greenland stik and use a 4" PVC pipe
w/ caps for a case! ;-)

100% luggage gorillaproof.

Or almost gorilla proof. The end cap on our PVC paddle tube
was kindly shattered by the baggage handlers somewhere
between Austin, TX and Boston, MA! The paddles were
fine, but how you shatter 4" PVC is beyond me.

We actually just picked up a new case for our Greenland sticks
from www.Cabelas.com called a Bazuka. It is made for saltwater
fishing rods. It has a nice handle, can be locked and has a
lifetime guarantee. Since it is 6" DIA it might fit some of
the narrower paddles out there.

I fly my paddles, but only once in a while use my nrs paddle bag. If I'm
touring I just stick them in my gear duffel and surround them with clothes or
even wrapped in a sleeping bag. While touring I don't want to have to store
that bag in my boat. It's not that big but say that a few times and pretty
soon even I won't fit in. If not touring, then they get the nrs bag and a
prayer. The airlines really do beat the hell out of things (remember the old
samsonite commercials?), though it's more the system than "they" per se. I
haven't worried about it alot lately because I have a breakdown GP and a 4
piece molokai, they seem to be much less prone to damage.
