Malden Mills going down? Blast! For two years I've been looking for a way to
buy their powerstretch fleece by the meter, finally found it, (Textile
Outfitters in Canada) and now they are going bust? What should I do: Count
my losses and weep, or invest all my savings in powerstretch and aquashell
so I have a supply for life?

Anyway: I bought a couple of meters of Aquashell (fuzzy rubber for some) and
made a handful of shirts and pants from it. It wears great, but you knew
that. A regular sewing machine can handle it well, although the sticky
surface can be a bit of a bother: You have to help it move under the needle.
I made a pair of pants for everyday use: Warm, waterproof, windproof and
comfortable to wear. I managed to put in pockets and a zipper: You can
handle the stuff like you would handle jeans.

I haven't tried any of it in cold water yet: In Holland the water
temperature is 0 deg C at the moment: I am too much of a sissy to try it
now.

Niels.

Malden Mills entered chapter 11 (refinancing), not chapter 7 (closing) bankruptcy.
I would not worry about losing the supply based on this declaration.

Given that they are technically solvent (according to some newspaper
articles online their assets excede liabilities), I'm hoping they will
pull through without prnblems. Their problems seem to have more to do
with cash flow and a (couple of?) cranky creditor(s).

Keep buying Polartec!

Mike,
contented Malden Mills customer.

A couple of tricks for sticky fabrics:

You can buy Teflon coated feet if they stick. If such feet are
not available for your machine, I understand that some sewing
shops can sell you peel-and-stick Teflon pads to put under
the foot.

If the needle is grabbing the fabric, there are Teflon coated
needles on the market.

If all else fails, put tissue paper over the fabric and sew through
it. When done, tear off the tissue. Facial tissue or toilet paper
works.

Mike
