Ahoy! I'm building a Pygmy Coho. Any suggestions? Does anybody paddle one
now? George

A friend of mine built one. It's a nice boat.

What kinds of suggestions were you looking for? Since it was a generic
request, the only thing I can suggest is that you take your time, pay
attention to detail, and ask specific questions if you're not sure about a
particular step. I'd also recommend the CLC building forum. While it's
true that it's sponsored by Pygmy's primary competitor, it's a forum for
people that are building or have built stitch-n-glue boats and the
construction techniques are mostly the same. When I built my CLC boat (a
Northbay XL) I found a lot of information through that BBS that wasn't in
the manual which saved time or potential headaches. Sit down for a few
hours and read through their archives and you'll find lots of useful
information.

Is there a similar forum somewhere for strip built canoes?

Rick

I would definitely start at Nick Schade/Guillemot's

Agreed. I hadn't realized that he had a new URL for his forum. It's gone
through a few url changes over the past few years but the content has
always been good. I should probably start reading it more myself as I
recently started building a cedar strip kayak. One resource that I don't
think I've ever seen mentioned, but has a lot of good information is the
One Ocean Kayak site (OneOceanKayaks.com)

And don't forget Nick Schade's kayak forum--the building bbs in
particular:
http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/index.cgi

The Coho is a nice boat. The knee brace kit is a good investment.

Rick,

I live in Suffolk, 30 miles or so south of you. Two years ago I built a
strip built kayak using a John Winters design and Nick Shade's book. The
book was invaluable as was John's advice. There is information on several
websites which was useful as well. I would have to check my records retrieve
the URLs. If you are interested in a strip built boat I'd be happy to
discuss what worked for me and what didn't. You are welcome to come see the
final result, or perhaps we could get together and paddle one day.

Richard
