Up here where to cold hangs around even in summer especially if there are
glaciers on my route I go with the following progression

Cool to cold - thin poly pro wind stopper fleese gloves

Cold to colder-2mm neopreme gloves with pre curved fingers. Also I test them
( and the wrist seals on my drysuit) to make sure they are not cutting off
circulation

"Why am I out here cold" - Fleese lined Nylon pogies- neopreme causes my
hands to sweat too much and when I have to pull my hands out to adjust
something I pay the price.

Also I over dress to produce more body heat to hopefully allow my body to
heat the body core as well as my hands and feet. Overdressing also helps me
warm my muscles up for paddling quicker.

Once when my hand got really cold I tried to build a fire in my kayak.
Unfortunately I quickly discovered "you can't have your kayak and heat it
too"
