Finally made the move to the Garmin GPSMAP 76. Am debating what
MapSource CD would offer the most shoreline detail: BlueChart, Roads &
Recreation, or Topo. From what I have been able to see on the Garmin
homepage, Topo has so much topo detail, it is hard to read the roads, and
many rural roads aren't included. Garmin recommends MetroGuide rather
than Roads & Rec because it has the auto trip planning function to any
destination you select, but the charts don't seem to offer as much
shoreline detail as Roads & Rec. Haven't been able to see the BlueChart
America charts...can't find a local dealer that carries it. Anybody out
there have experience and preferences with all this? I am more concerned
with getting something that shows good shoreline detail (offshore islands
and such) than good road detail. Thanks for your help.....Ken

I have both Roads & Rec. (R&R) and MetroGuide (MG) and prefer MG for
NavAid and shoreline information. It also includes tide prediction data
in many places, but I believe your 76 already has that data. Usually I
find MG to have more detail (for ex. it shows Santa Barbara island [S.
Cal.] very precisely but R&R just shows a dot), but sometimes R&R is
better in certain areas. R&R usually shows more creeks. You can compare
MG, Topo and R&R with the Garmin MapViewer at:
http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/ . Be sure to zoom way in
and click on More Detail to do the comparison in your area.

I haven't used BlueChart, which gives you the same maps as regular paper
nautical charts. It costs much more if you want maps for multiple areas
and doesn't seem worth it to me unless you need the water depth
information.

I use a Garmin Legend and was able to download the marine POI database
from their web site.
http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap76/download.html
I don't know how it will work in your GPS but in the Legend it loaded
with no problems. It will overwrite whatever maps I have loaded in it now
but they can be reloaded later if I need them.

David,

The Marine POI database is the original database of Nav Aids that comes
installed with every new Legend. If you install any other maps, ie. Topo or
R & R, it overwrites the original data and you lose all of the Nav Aids.
This will restore the original data when you uninstall the extra maps you
may have installed.
