Do any of you have suggestions on Atlanta area paddling clubs for this
new paddler? The only Atlanta club that listed on the KayakGuide
directory so far is Atlanta Sea Kayakers http://www.atlantakayak.com

On another subject, I finally got to paddle the Big Bend in Florida. Our
club had an EXCELLENT trip to the Wacissa, Aucilla and Econfina (where
we camped). The photos are at
http://www.kayakguide.com/PhotoAlbum/0205ElmersSCPBigBendPaddling/
The Wacissa is a crystal clear, first magnitude spring fed river that
also happens to be rich with both fossils and human artifiacts. We had
an anthropologist and a biologist paddling with us, so we did some
hunting for fossils and artifacts with snorkels and scuba. My son and I
also did a kayak scuba exploration of the head spring (still waiting for
the photos). We also paddled an old canal dug by slaves to connect the
Wacissa with the Aucilla. The Econfina was a salt marsh tidal river
leading to the gulf (excellent kayak fishing).

One of our canoers encountered what I believe is most dangerous part of
Florida paddling, an attack by a wasp nest disturbed by a branch they
touched on the slave canal. He had the quick reflex to jump under water
and was stung only a couple of times on the lip (ouch) and face.
Fortunately, several of us carried Benadryl in our first aid kits and he
was fine a short time later.

We'll be posting these new paddling routes on KayakGuide to add to the
one on already there for the Wacissa head spring.

Best regards,

   To whom it may concern:
I'm looking to get into kayaking on the weekends and maybe as
exercise during the week. I live in Atlanta and was wondering if you
knew of any ways I could get started (local groups, outfitters,
   etc.).

   Thanks!

As far as paddle clubs around Atlanta go, there are two: Atlanta Whitewat=
er
Club and Georgia Canoeing Association (www.georgiacanoe.org), which has m=
ore
kayaks than canoes, despite its name. Both of these are mainly white wate=
r
oriented, although the GCA has the occasional touring trip or course. AW =
is
less newbie-friendly. Not that they're not nice people, but their events
tend to be on more difficult water and they don't do much instruction.=0D

Atlanta Sea Kayakers is only loosely definable as a club. It has no dues,
officers, by-laws, membership list, or organization. Just a web site and =
a
core group of people who like to get together for day paddles, kayak camp=
ing
and base camp car-camping with day trips. Monitor the events sections on
the Forum at the web site, and come along on something that sounds
interesting. There's usually a lively discussion of logistics (oh, yeah, =
no
trip leaders, either) that you can hop into. =0D

PS--I'm using a new email client. Could someone please tell me if this is
coming through readable?=0D
