I'm looking for information from anyone that might have paddled and camped
on either Fontana lake (south of the Smoky's) or in the Land Between the
Lakes region. We may be down there in late September, and I am evaluating my
options. We're hoping to find a place where we can avoid crowds.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

I just got back from a week along Lake Fontana. I consider it one of my
favorite kayaking destinations. I may be there paddling and camping alone
in the middle or end of Sept. myself! I'm hoping to do a cemetery research
project about the cemeteries along Hazel Creek that were cut off from the
outside world by the creation of the lake during WW II.

Anyway, crowds are not an option on Lake Fontana. I was there on July 3rd
and didn't see a dozen people at Proctor campsite. Three tents were all
that were pitched. There are day trippers at Hazel Creek because of the
spectacular trout fishing, but they are mostly fishermen - quiet, nice
folks.

http://www.griztrax.net/sea_yakking/Springyakking/Springyak12.html shows
Hazel Creek photos from other paddlers on Lake Fontana. A web search will
give a lot of fishing info, suitable for a paddler, as well as some history
of the area. For instance, Proctor was a town of a thousand people at one
time and now no one lives there because the lake drowned all the roads that
got to it.

There are a large number of campsites along and near the shore. It's all
part of the Great Smoky Mtn. National Park, so their website is another
place to get info.

The Cable Cove launch site is directly across the lake from Hazel Creek and
makes a good put-in to get to Proctor.

I really love this area. But I live in the Chicago area, so anyplace wild
is nice as far as I'm concerned.

Jim,

Thanks for your reply. Do you find the Cable Cove site safe for vehicle
storage for several days? Also, have you explored further east of Hazel
Creek? Do you mind if I contact you back channel for additional info in the
future, so I don't clutter other PW'ers mailboxes?

We come from relatively close areas--Grand Rapids, MI here. I get to the
windy city a few times each year--always make a stop at the Chicagoland
Canoe Base (I think that's the name).

Thanks,
Steve

Steve

You are not cluttering my mailbox, in fact I do I was
very glad you asked I was also planing a trip on
Fontana Lake, I had not set a date yet. It’s a timing
issue with friends. I was going to ask about Fontana
myself about Fontana once I set a date. I was just
down in the Smoky camping in May and I picked up some
maps of the lake, but it is always good to have some
first hand information, on paddling the lake. So
whatever you find out of interest feel fee to post it
or you can just send me a copy if you like.

Randy Smith.

DITTO. I'm in Virginia, and my brother is in Knoxville, TN. We are considering a Spring trip somwhere in Western NC. This months issue of Adventure Magazine had a little spot in it on Fontana - just enough to get me a little curious, and then these Fontana posts appear on P'Wise. Now, I'm more than a lot curious, so if you get any good info backchannel, I'd appreciate it if you forwarded a copy to me as well.

Thanks

Rick - Poquoson, VA
