Skip Looks like the date on the photo with the faded boats in April 30. 2002, exactly two year after the start of the trip. So maybe we can expect major fadeout with a red Klepper after 730 days of exposure. That would take me until I'm 200 years old. I think that I'll be safe with a red boat. G'Day, In Australia, paddling an olive green Klepper ten to fourteen hours a week in salt water, I began to see fading after 6 months and significant fading after 2 years. As mentioned before "Fabricguard" is supposed to help slow the colour change. I think it has worked on my boat although I like the look of a somewhat faded olive green Klepper! The fading doesn't seem to indicate reduced strength. A friend says he doesn't want to use the Fabricguard yet on his red Klepper until it's faded a bit and looks the part. I don't know if it's available in Oz but I've read and heard that regular applications of '303', a uv blocker is a good solution to the problem. I use it on my plastic kayak regularly. Does anyone have any first hand info on '303' use on other materials? I do wish I'd had this stuff when I had my Columbia 28 sailboat. Dave G. What I was wondering was if the boats are in fact as faded as they appear or could some of the faded look be simply due to salt and other deposits which would go away after a good scrub? Leaving a much cleaner and brighter looking deck - faded some what as one would expect. I have about a ten year old klepper with a blue deck, the previous owner stated it had spent most of its life in Arizona with some trips into Mexico. Both places where I would expect allot of sun fading. The deck is faded a bit as would be expected but not nearly as faded as the red decked boats in the photos. So I suspect they are simply in need of a good cleaning to reveal the actual state of the coloring. But then again I am frequently wrong about things . :-( David *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
