Care to enlarge on what that issue was?
I blew a roll in surf last weekend and wet exited, very annoying. While I
haven't missed a roll on flat water practice for a while, I realise that all
the flat water practice in the world doesn't help prepare for
knocked-over-breathless-roll-up-knocked-down-again-totally-out-of-air-violen
t-surf conditions. So ideally you need to practice rolling in the most
boisterous conditions available.

Check out Brookspaddlegear.com, the Greenland gear. Tha Avataq floatation
device will work. Grab it off the stern deck and roll up with it. Or
(cheap) get to pieces of 2" ethafoam cut a paddle channel and duct tape
the pieces together. One for each blade if you want. The paddle face is
still flat so you can paddle with them on, as opposed to a inflatable
paddle float, plus as you get more confident you just hack away at the
foam until there's nothing left.

John, read the "Rescue Float" manual on our website for directions to doing
a "Float Roll" There are also some tips following that section on learning
to Eskimo roll on your own using a flat foam float on one paddle blade.
