I would hesitate to recommend the chlorine bleach treatment. It does
bad things to neoprene, nylon, and rubber.

Try Sink the Stink, Febreeze, or the Wetsuit Conditioner.

Salt water also seems to harbor a lot more "microbial action" than does
freshwater. I rinse my gear after every trip in salt water, and after
a month or so of trips in fresh water.

Has anyone suggested vinegar? I use a 4 to 1 mix with and it works great.
Just soak it and rinse off.

Yep, I don't measure the ratio but I'll throw in a bunch of vinegar, maybe
add some warm water and let the shoes sit for a hour or so. Then I dump
out the liquid and let air dry.

I can't believe how bad the shoes will smell if they get wet if I get stuck
running in the rain...... 8-) RANK, is not a strong enough word..... 8-)

Back to LurkMode.....

I would have to agree with Shawn. The only water that has
had a deleterious effect on my neoprene is the chlorinated
pool water. I has dried the surface of it and made it
brittle. Sink the Stink is quite good from my experience.
