I am sure we all add a lot more to our kits, but this is my reason to not
even start with the basic prepackaged kit. My experience, in back woods and
water environment first aid, is most kits are geared to bandages that are easy
to remove, rather than tough, and are not all that waterproof. Whereas, my
concern is for durability and protection while being able to continue to use the
damaged body part. As examples, instead of ordinary Band-Aids, I carry lots of
1" 3M Active Strips. Instead of medical tape, I use duct tape (obviously
multipurpose, too). These protect the wound while still allowing you to
paddle, etc.
Add the bandages to a generous supply of Neosporin and you reduce infection
and decrease healing time about 1/3.

I'd add a small roll of electrician's tape to use on fingers and the
like,
easier to remove than duct tape (which I also include), great for
paddle blister prevention...
the moleskin of waterworld. I would include a variety of moldable
splints...arm, leg.
and finger sized...especially the finger size. And don't forget the
Vitamin I (ibuprofen).

Or, a Sawyer Extractor if you paddle or backpack in venomous creature
territory.

A caution on the use of ibuprofen while kayaking. This would
apply to those who do long distance paddling, especially on
long trips.

At the above link, scroll down to the section on Pain Relievers.
Amie recently returned from the NYC marathon and had a brochure
that contained almost the same information. It was from the
marathon medical director and it would appear that the
indiscriminant use of ibuprofen and similar pain relievers is
contraindicated for endurance athletes. The significant difference
between the brochure and this web site is the time prior to
an activity - midnight before on the web site and 24 hours before
in the brochure.
