*Any suggestions on makes, models, sources of a lightweight compact tripod?*

Hey There,

If you were concerned about weight and bulk, I have a Quantaray QT II 50,
that extends to 22 inches and weighs 1 pound. Its not a great tripod, but it
does work. I often bring only a travel zoom for my Canon EOS with a slow f
stop and the combo seems to work well, as long as I don't exceed 3-4 pounds
on the head. It works very well when I bring fixed focal length lenses of
24-35-50 and 90. It is excellent with macro as it is the lowest to the ground
unit I have, without resorting to the reversable column type tripods.

If you notched up the weight a bit to 2.25 pounds, the Gitzo G1026 is quite
nice. It is slow to deploy as the legs are circular tension and not flip
locks. It has many features and deploys over 40 inches in height. A micro
ball head is very useful as long as the weight is reduced to the minimum, ie,
small to midsize frame camera (canon rebel and 20 to 90 fixed length lenses
or travel zooms.
