Sea Kayakers,

A few friends and I drove a little over an hour south this morning to go for a
paddle in San Diego. With the weather so nice, we weren't wearing any
neoprene, just shorts and shirts, and of course, sunglasses. We launched in
Mission Bay and headed 11 miles north to La Jolla Shores. Along the way
paddled out about a mile or two to try to find some whales. We didn't find any
whales, but we did stop out there to do some rolls in the refreshing 59 degree
F. water. At La Jolla Shores we played in some three-foot surf for about an
hour before calling it a day. On the drive home I had to turn the air
conditioning on. All day long people we ran into kept on mentioning some
football game. I thought to myself, "Who in San Diego would be home watching
a football game on a day like this?"

I just checked the weather.com page to see what it was going to be like
today. Here's
what it said:

...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONTINUES THE WIND CHILL ADVISORY THROUGH
THIS MORNING...

TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE TO FALL TO NEAR ZERO OR BELOW THIS
MORNING...WHILE NORTHWEST WINDS CONTINUE AT 10 TO 15 MPH. THIS WILL PRODUCE
WIND CHILL VALUES BETWEEN -15 AND -25 THROUGH THE MORNING. TEMPERATURES
WILL BEGIN TO RISE AND WINDS WILL BEGIN TO DIMINISH AFTER NOON.

EXPOSED SKIN CAN SUFFER FROM FROSTBITE IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES...SO DRESS
ADEQUATELY. BE SURE TO WEAR LAYERED CLOTHING...AND WEAR A HAT AND MITTENS
TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE DANGERS OF FROSTBITE.

I'd still rather live here than southern California.

I woke up on Saturday, threw my surf boat on the car and head down to San
Onofre surf beach. The sun was just beginning to come up as I found a place
to park. Mike Johnson, waveski designer and manufacturer was there, as well
as a collection of his buddies. As usual when they saw my antiquated old
Sabre they descended upon me and tried to talk me into a waveski. I told them
the same thing I always tell them, "if you would like to sponsor me and give
me a boat then I would be happy to use it." That always shuts them up :-)
It was a fairly cool early morning, but the waves were going off with a
consistent six feet, so I grabbed my boat off of the car and launched. As I
fought my way out through the surf it became very apparent just how much I
had overindulged in the fruitcake over the holidays. I caught some very nice
waves and got some great rides. When I came in I met a couple of other
friends who had just showed up. By then the sun was out and things were
warming up. It was going to be a beautiful day.
I went out a second time and got some more nice rides. In the process I
capsized twice. Each time I resorted to the trusty Pawlata roll as the surf
was large and consistent, and I was getting pretty tired. When I had had
enough I came back in and warmed up with some hot coffee I had brought along.
I really hate birthdays, but as this one goes, I would have to say that this
was a pretty good way to celebrate turning 48! I packed up my stuff and head
home to greet my family and they were just climbing out of bed.

Southern California may not be a great place for a kayaker to live, but it
does have it's moments -- especially this time of year when most of the
tourists have gone home and left the beaches to us locals.

That's nice but I read paddlewise to read articles about paddling, not
people gloating about the weather.

Yesterday's "Stupor Bowl" paddle on Michigan's Huron River was held in
13oF air, ~34oF water, 10 kt NNW winds with intermittent snow squalls.
Two attendees, not counting wildlife (which included red-tailed hawk,
blue heron, belted kingfishers, mallards, muskrats, and a mink). I was
quite comfy in Patagonia capilene longies and liner socks, Immersion
Reseach ThickSkins top, Polarfleece farmer john, Smartwool socks, Chota
mukluks with chemical heaters in the toes, Kokatat overbibs and Tec-tour
Goretex anorak, fleece toque, Sealskinz gloves and neoprene pogies.
Next time, must remember the vaseline for my face.
The main problem was the low water level. The absence of a January
thaw has locked up water that would otherwise have gone into the river.
In my shallow-draft Dagger Edisto, it was an interesting slalom course
through the submerged logs and sandbars.
Sorry to hear you had to use the AC, Duane. Be careful, heatstroke is
insidious ;^)
