For those of you interested in kayaking in Lake Powell the news is pretty grim
the lake is down 50% and is expected to go even lower. Read about it here:

I guess there might not be much water in the Grand Canyon this year either. --

I am trying to find more information about kayaking on Lake
Winnipeg in Manitoba. On one hand I am curious about shorter
trips on the South end of the lake but I am also considering the
logistics of a crossing from the Red River to Norway House on the
East side. I am aware of some of the more obvious references
(like "Canoeing with the Cree") but am interested in finding more
information that would apply to kayaking on the lake, or just more
detail on travel logistics in general. People that write about the
lake talk about unpredictable waters, fierce storms, and true
wilderness isolation. I guess that is maybe why it sounds so
interesting! It seems very few people actually attempt the crossing
at all, I am wondering if anyone has done it by sea kayak.

Any information or leads? Anyone interested in putting aside
common sense and pondering a crossing a couple years out?

No personal experience - just the day before have seen the film on TV on
crossing the Lake Winnipeg to Norway House (in a norway boat, rowing and
sailing). Wow... nice scenery, but mosquitoes were a disaster. These guys
tried to reproduce 1840 conditions - Norway boat, pemmican food, no bug
repellents, no mesh tents etc. Don't remember name of the film, though. It
will be continued soon (pains of portaging from Norway house farther north
:-)...Sorry for this bla-bla :-)
Alex.

Sounds like you're referring to History Television Canada's "Quest for
the Bay". It's a series of historical recreations along those lines.
The first was Homesteading in Manitoba, then the one you saw, and the
current one "Klondie - Quest for the gold".

You can see the page for "Quest for the Bay" here:

Look at the positive side. There are a lot of spots that the power boats
could go that are now close to the surface. Hopefully, a bunch of them will
go aground and sink.
