Perhaps there are a few new, or even some long-time, subscribers who haven't
heard this one:

Two eskimos were freezing to death in their frail craft, but when the lit a
fire to keep warm, the kayak sank........

proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

So smile a little,

Ol' Dave

With a horizontal rain blowing the 100 or so friends and family members who
gathered to see them off, Larry Koenig and Arthur Hebert launched their yaks
into the surf at Grand Isle, La, this morning at approximately 10:30 am. So
they're on their way on their 4,000 mile, 6 month journey around the
circumference of the Gulf of Mexico. We had good news coverage within the
state. Those of you in Texas, Mexico, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi,
they'll be in your state's coastal waters at some point during the next 6
months. To follow their journey, visit www.lacostadelgolfo.com Marsanne

They have specially-modified boats which easily raft together, and a custom
made sail rigged on a carbon shaft. I didn't get a look at the sail before
they left, can't tell you the size, will try to remember to ask. They were
under a lot of time pressure to launch on the day they planned. As for the
sat phone, it's donated by Shell Pipeline Co and Stratos Communications,
thankfully! Their boats are really stuffed and really much heavier than they
planned. They sounded a lot better today than they did Tuesday. Their
website is getting thousands of hits. Someone told me the TV video even ran
in Brazil! If you see any coverage of this trip in any media, I would really
appreciate a private email, since I am the one who set it up. Marsanne
