Hey, folks. I stopped by an Outfitter in the Carolina OBX last week,
and was just looking around while the rest of the family shopped at the
neighboring store. The salesperson was talking to someone about a boat
that was using some new type of material - not glass, and not plastic,
but I didn't catch what it was. The boat was a Perception boat, I
think. At least, that's what they were standing next to.

I was going to hang around and see what it was all about, but the family
came and hog tied me and dragged me to the ice cream shop.

I checked the Perception Web Site and didn't find anything about a new
material, nor did I send them an e-mail inquiry. But, I wanted to ask
you folks what it's all about, since we have some outfitters on the
forum. Did I hear correctly? What is the new material? What are the
advantages/disadvantages, etc?

Sounds like Perception's "Sonoma" and their "Airalite" material. I
haven't paddled the boat yet. Here's Perception's press release:

subject: [Paddlewise] Boat maintenance questions
Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 11:10:16 -0600
I've just purchased my first fiberglass kayak (a 10 year old VCP
Pintail) and I have a few maintenance questions:

While the hull is sound, there are a few deep chips/scratches in the
gel coat (deep enough to expose the underlying fiberglass) that I
would like to repair. I'd like to do the repairs myself so I'm
looking for recommendations on a book covering fiberglass repair.

The black strip that covers the deck-to-hull seam is chipped or
scraped away in several locations. What is this material? Is it
structural or just cosmetic?

The deck lines are quite loose, the skeg rope is quite stiff (it
doesn't release very well), and the deck elastics don't have much
stretch. I'll be replacing all these lines. The deck lines and skeg
rope both appear to be standard 4 mm braided cord -- any
recommendations from the list on both the types of rope / bungie
material would be appreciated. Also, how tight should I make the
deck lines?

While the hatch covers have some surface cracking, they 'look' good
on the inside. It there a way to repair these (how about that
spray-on plastic stuff used to coat tool handles?) or should I just
replace them? Also, the rear hatch is missing the elastic bungie
ring that goes into the groove around the hatch's perimeter - what is
the best way to make a new ring?

Thanks, Brian

Keep the same size skeg line but follow the advice from Peter to
upgrade the deck lines and bungie to the largest that will fit the
deck fittings. Avoid nylon line, as it stretches when wet. You'll
want polyester, preferably kernmantle style. You can get this at
any decent marine supply shop.

I'm not aware of any special bungie material - I use what I can
get from Mountain Equipment Coop.

Yep, that's it. I must have missed that Press Release.

Anybody have any experience with Airalite?
