My youngest daughter has FINALLY (thank you, Lord) taken an interest in paddling with me, and has her heart set on a Umiak, for no other reason than she's seen it, sat in it, she likes it, and it's available at our local outfitter. But, being a 11 year old soon to be woman, once her mind is set, I'm finding it difficult to change, so she won't even discuss other boats. So, before I buy it or take a stand and not buy it (that will get ugly!) I should ask for input about it's suitability for her. Here are the specifics. She's never paddled, is 11, and only weights about 65 pounds soaking wet (she's a little thing). She'll only be doing recreational paddling in calm protected water, and will hug the shoreline. She will NOT be out on her own. Either I or my wife will be with her. Even if it only serves her well for a few years, I'll sell it and upgrade her to something else. She wants me to teach her "stuff", and is hesitant to take classes through a professional, but I may insist on it after I've had a few lessons with her (she'll listen to a stranger, but with me, she'll say "Dad, I got it, move on!" - that NEVER happens with you and your daughters, does it....) Here's the link to the boat. http://www.perceptionkayaks.com/perception/products/recreational/umiak/d ownload.html Thanks for any and all comments.
