Paddlewisers: Has anyone added a crutch strap to their PFD to prevent riding up? Comments and experiences welcome. I used to use an inflatable free diving vest and found it a minimal problem to thread the strap down through the spray skirt, but the attachment point was quite high on that vest. That is the major reason I haven't opted for another. The style is out of fashion and I haven't invested a lot of time to figure out how to do it to a standard PFD. It would be a lot more comfortable though; having a slightly loose fit vs. a tight thoracic fit to keep it on in the water. I Denmark they are widely used, but mostly in kayak clubs because with this kind of PDF one size fits everybody. And are mostly for used for touring/"flat water" and racing kayaks. If you have a jacket with a double skirt and use a spray skirt then you will not be able to use the crutch strap inless you put he PDF under the jacket. If you enter the kayak from the water then the buckle on the strap sometimes is caught on the cockpit rim and then forced open - that is why I bought my own PDF. I have found that most people don't secure their pfd s correctly and this results in riding up. Lotus secures a set of instructions on a hang tag with their pfd, basically it states to loosen all the fittings before putting it on. Zip it up, then clip and tighten all the fasteners starting from the bottom and ending with the shoulder straps. This works for me. >On 10 Apr 2003 at 10:06, Peter Treby wrote: > > >>Has anyone added a crutch strap to their PFD to prevent riding up? >>Comments and experiences welcome. >> >> -- gabriel l romeu ± http://studiofurniture.com Ø http://journalphoto.org ± ± http://kayakoutfitting.org Ø http://furnituresociety.org ± *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). From: "gabriel romeu" <romeug_at_erols.com> > Lotus secures a set of instructions on a hang tag with their pfd, This past Tuesday at our pool sessions, I pointed out to someone that he'd have better luck on reentry practice if his PFD wasn't up around his ears. This person told me it was a lousy PFD and couldn't be adjusted well. When I paddled behind him, I could see the lotus flower logo on the back. Sometimes the problem is _in_ the PFD. RTFI Mike PS - just to be absolutely clear, I've got a Lotus and they are great PFDs. (I hope I'm not sounding _too_ cynical these days.) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
