Sad new this morning. Looks like a kayaker has been found dead off the west
coast of Nootka Island, with the kayak showing damage. The other paddler is
missing. The two men were on a five-day trip. They didn't show up for work
yesterday. No other details yet.

Hello all

I am going north of there tomorrow so I have been watching the weather up
there. There were fully developed storm winds there three days ago. There
are not a lot of places in that area to put in if they were paddling the
outside of Nootka Island. A gale was predicted, quickly upgraded to a storm
just before the system arrived.

The latest news is that they have located the second body about 10 km away
from the first body. They are giving the location as the North, outside part
of Nootka Island. Dan was just saying that they showed some news footage of
one of the paddlers being hauled off in a stretcher. The arm that was
hanging off the stretcher had a latex cuff on it implying that the paddler
was wearing a drysuit/top...

One fellow was from Nanaimo and the other from Vancouver. Both were in their
thirties and reported to be experienced paddlers.

Nothing else to add right now...

Here's the blurb from the news. The names have been released. Coast Guard
indicated to me the bodies of the kayakers were found near Louie Bay if
anyone is familiar with the area. I have to confirm that location, as other
reports said the location was Southern Nootka. Rescue officials don't know
the area that well maybe. Pretty rough on the outside too. I never screw
around on the outside of Nootka -- reefs extend five miles out to see.
Nothing else like it within hundreds and hundreds of miles. Mucho respecto.
Paddlers have died in the area before.

Pathology report is in on the paddlers who died off Nootka. The media report
doesn't make full sense, but I will be investigating this to my fullest
potential in the weeks to come if compelling enough facts emerge for some
good lessons.
