Thanks to all of you who responded to my query about the Gulfstream. I had an opportunity to paddle one today. My feeling is that I'll buy one on Monday. I had paddled several times about three years ago. Then life and work interfered and I was unable to paddle for a while. At the time I had almost purchased an Atlantis. Today was the first time back in a kayak. I found the boat to be fast, relatively stable for a novice and to track much better than any of the other boats I had tried before while still being maneuverable for a new paddler with limited skills. (But it is amazing how quickly a low brace came back - only needed it once but I needed it then.) The only complaint I had was the backband. I'm not sure whether it was the adjustment or the band itself. I noted that more than one person had replaced the one from the factory. Which one would you recommend and what does it offer that the standard one doesn't? Was it height, adjustability while underway, comfort...?? Thanks for you help. Andy, I found the original backband on my GS to be very comfortable. I only replaced it when it finally fell apart from use. I then replaced it with an NSI anatomic backband. If I had it to do all over, I would have saved $10 and not gotten the deluxe version with the adjustable lumbar support - it's unnecessary. Also being able to adjust the backband easily is over-rated. Once the backband is adjusted, I don't play with them any longer.
