Hello, everyone.

At the turn of the new year, there was a brief thread about a gentleman
who had set a goal for the year, to paddle a large distance. I think it
was 2000 miles, and I believe you said you'd have to paddle at least
every other day to achieve the goal. My memory isn't so good, though,
so I may be way off base.

Is that gentleman still on the forum? I don't recall his name at the
moment. If you're out there, how about an update? What was the
original goal, are you on track, and so forth? Just curious....

The original post mentioned a 3000 Nm goal. I said something like I was
already 500 mile behind in the first month so why bother to make
resolutions. Back channel I wrote you about my plans and explained that
I had laid out a schedule for 3000 Nm but I knew that I could not actually
keep up with that plan. I was hoping to use that schedule as incentive to
get in an actual 2000 Nm.

Well its not even going to be close. I will have about 500 Nm done by the
end of August. I am still hoping to get up to 1000 Nm. Our best paddling
season is October - December so it is possible, but not likely unless I can
get closer to the 150 Nm/month level. Most months I have been paddling
around 70Nm, but in Feb and July I got in less than 20Nm which really hurt
my efforts. One of the of the factors has been the lack of 4-6 hr
paddles. I have been doing regular 2 hour paddles in the 6 to 7 Nm range
but I just can't seem to find time to get in the 12-18 Nm paddles that I
use to do fairly often.

Still it has been interesting keeping track of my progress. I have an
Excel spreadsheet with dates, miles and paddling times as well as highlight
notes describing each paddle. Its nice to be able to look back and see
where I went, who I paddled with and what interesting things we saw.

Mark, thanks for the update. I'm going to archive this e-mail so that I
don't forget all the particulars again :-)

I'd like to ask you about it once more in early January just to see how
the year ended up, if you don't mind.

My paddling has really suffered this year as well. My daughters lit a
fire under their athletics, so we've been busy getting "bleacher butt"
all year. At one point, lasting for 3 weeks in the height of all the
overlap, I had 2 kids on 5 teams. That was NOT a fun 3 weeks! It
wasn't supposed to work out that way, but when they advanced to
Regional, State and then National tournaments (we thought they'd lose at
the Regional level) we got into a heavy overlap that killed us. Right
now, it's back to one team each, so it feels almost like a vacation!

When there has been time to paddle, the kids have been going with me, so
a 4 hour 15nm paddle has turned into a 1 hr 2nm "fun float". But, as
long as they are showing an interest, I won't complain :-)
